The Staats House
Columbiaville, New York
Henry landed here in 1609s. The Stuyvesants held the land for a bit then gave it to General Staats, who built between 1644 and 1654. 16, mind you, not 17, 18 or 19. The General did well, because his house has stood the test of time. Stone by stone, beam by beam a testament to the longevity of classic design. A tour of the property gives you Hudson River views, Fields, beautiful specimen trees and plantings, a lovely patio and two Dutch barns. Inside you're greeted by the stone mudroom. Through the pantry into the amply sized kitchen. Down the hall to the sunroom. And what a sunroom it is. Bounded by stone and glass, you feel a connection with the timeless nature of the home and surroundings. At the other end of the house another large living room, centered on a fieldstone fireplace and fine built-in shelves. Upstairs to the second floor four bedrooms, including a lovely master. Notice the depth of the walls. Another set of stairs to the finished attic bedroom. A one bedroom guest house finishes up our tour. Additional acreage available.
